I came across viral marketing when I was working on some reports for the list building course. In a simple term, it describes the methods used by many online marketers to increase their market penetration and build up the brand. Essentially, it is a marketing techniques that induces viewers of that promotions to pass on a marketing message to others and hence creating a potentially exponential growth in the message’s visibility and effect. This can be in a form of free report, ebooks, emails, blogs, podcasts or videos.
With a properly defined strategy, viral marketing techniques can bring tons of free traffic and is very cost effective. If it is done well, it can be used to promote an offer, build a database, and even propel a brand from obscurity to global fame.
In a typical marketing environment, the marketer will do the talking and customers/potential prospect will do the listening. Viral marketing however relies on the recipient of that promotion/messages to do the replication and dissiminate the messages further. This can sometimes happen without them even realizing it.
Take the free report or ebook example. Inside it, you can have links to your website or promotions and everyone that reads your report will see them.
Once you’ve got your free report out to a few people, it will get passed-on, sold, and will generally appear all around the internet.
Imagine if 100 people download the free report/ebook and and ten of them decide to offer it to their mailing list, and another ten decide to add it to their website. From this, another three hundred people download your report. From that, ten people decide to put it on their website… and so on.
See what I mean? This is where the name viral marketing comes from.
Pretty quickly your report will be all over the internet, being offered in exchange for people opting-in to newsletters, given away as a free bonus, etc.
The great thing about viral marketing is that once your report has been out for a while, it will start to take on a life of its own.
Whatever the strategy you plan for your viral marketing techniques, the most important thing to remember is that you must offer something which is of value and interest to your target market. Among the techniques, Viral videos are quite big at the moment. You will see that a lot of ‘gurus’ utilizing this method to build their list and spread their offers/promotions.
It’s a simple idea that you create a video and have some links visible on it pointing to your websites or promotion. You can even created a squeeze page containing your video and offers your viewers free reports, ebook or another videos in exchange of their name and email. Having said that, it doesn’t make this method any less effective thank the traditional marketing techniques.
If you don’t currently use viral marketing in your own business then you are really missing out on a lot of free traffic and exposure.
