After few weeks of figuring out how to setup this site, I finally managed to sort some technical issues regarding the setup and decided that it is a good time to start posting something. This will be the site that I’ll use to jot down what I do and stuffs that I learn along the journey to realize my dream of having my own virtual real estate.
The site is not even near perfect, if you drop in today, you will see that the ad sections are still empty. What the heck, I’ll just do it and I will find time to fix it later. Taking action is better than waiting for it to become perfect.
It has been an eye opener for me to actually start everything from scratch – yeah… I’m a noob on the block with no experience in setting up sites myselfs. I’ve some experience blogging on blogger platform but nothing fancy about that. I have another site that somebody helped to set up for me..from the hosting to buying the name and connecting the two together- I just tell the guy the domain name that I want and he set it up for me.
What I did after that was, I download a copy of Jeff Johnson’s Free SEO Blog Software Package, upload it using FTP and in one click I’ve got an optimized wordpress blog …. everything was there and I don’t really need to install the plugins myself. That site is still in older version of WordPress and I still haven’t got around to upgrade it.
Due to my naivety, I installed it at the wrong location and when I typed in the site’s name, I can only see white space .. with the cgi bin and some folders including ‘wordpress folder’. The real page will come out if I click the wordpress folder. I searched the net to understand what happened but don’t really know how to really fix it. I found a temporay solution by using redirect… and yes I only figure out what’s wrong last week…. which was.. I uploaded the ‘wordpress folder’ itself after I unzip Jeff’s sofware… what I should be doing was uploading the stuffs inside it directly to the root of my public_html folder. That’s why when I type my site’s name I cannot see it.. .it is at the wrong folder and all I can see it is a ‘wordpress folder’.
I’ll have to move it back to the correct location and stop using the redirect. Maybe I’ll do it during the weekend. Although it was wrongly setup … it is actually on the first page of Google… I can’t beleive it myself when I searched for it last night… I should have put some effort to do the clean up and will definitely benefit a lot from it. That will be next on the list.
A bit about this new site, I’m using WordPress 2.7 that I installed via Fantastico.. I use wordpress because I don’t know how to do the html stuffs and I feel that wordpress is easier to use for a noob like me. The black and white theme is from Bradley Hart. This theme is very simple and clean and it is already SEO optimized. I installed some plugins to spice it up further. His site is also very useful and I learned few things about SEO from there.
In my next post, I’ll write about purchasing domain name, getting a hosting account and setting up the DNS server to link the two together. It is simple thing but I know that someboidy out there could benefit from it.
