Some SEO Techniques to Improve My Site Ranking

This site is still brand new and I’m taking some steps to improve its ranking. There is no doubt that unique content will make the site valuable to the reader but there are also some other ways that can be implemented to help it rank better. Folks in the net sphere called it search engine optimization (SEO) techniques.

There are some tweaking that I’d done to my site based on some readily available information on the net on this SEO topic. Well, even if you’re not an expert on this matter I think these techniques are very easy to follow. I leave the details explaination to the SEO expert and will not try to explain it. Ok… here are what I did.

1) Change the permalink

In the beginning when I set up the site.. whenever I clik on any post, it will give something like suriati.com/2009/04/sample-post… it is long and ugly. It is actually showing that the permalink is set to month and name. It is better to have the link as short as possible – straight to the point… so I change the permalink structure to /%postname%/. Some people like to include the category i,e /%category% /%postname%/ but I prefer just to use the post name.

You can actually change under ‘setting’ -> ‘permalink settings’

2) I use pinging …

What it does it ping your blog post to search engine whenever you update your site. So, it’s kinda promoting your site to many directories on the web. To do this, go to Setting -> Writing Setting -> Update Service. You can then include your ping list inside the box. Some of my ping list includes feedster and moreover. Use it wisely…

3) I use Max Blog Press Plugin Optimizer to ensure that it only pings swhen I make new post and not when I update the previously published post. This will prevent excessive pinging that could get pose your site a problem with the search engine

4) I use “noindex/nofollow” on some links to minize it from draining my link juice .. You can actually use the ‘ultimate no index no follow’ plugin to achieve this.

5) I also use All in One SEO/Headspace plugin for optimizing my site for higher search engine ranking

Those are some other tweaks that I did as well, which include the url canonization, creating the sitemap and the bookmarking plugins. Maybe I should compile the list of the plugin that I use so that others can benefits from it as well
