I’d never done audio before and don’t quite know how to go about it. So, when I want to create my first audio file, I decided to use of Mr Google and Youtube. When I type my query into the search box, I was very surprised to see the wealth of information that I can get on this topic.
I used Audacity to record and audit my audio. It’s free and good enough for the entry level audio creation. I heard about it before but never really try to use it. It might seem complicated but believes me; it is very easy to learn and I have fun using it.
Since my apartment is next to a busy road, I’d to wait until late night to actually do the recording. After a few trial and errors, I manage to get the whole recording done. It feels weird hearing myself talking on the speakers but I’m glad I did that.
What do I learn from this process?
I discover the way to edit the audio, put in music at the beginning and end of the files, converting it to mp3 and setting it up to stream inside the protected area on my site.
Not only I gain knowledge on the methods of creating the audio file, I also become aware of the technology that people use in their recording. What is suitable for the start up and even some high end equipments that you can use if you have the budget. It is fascinating to see what people have for their setup and how they go about enhancing the quality of the audio that they produce.
I was having some problems with spikes and pops in the audio though and have to rerecord certain sections to take care of it. A quick search on the internet reveals that I can actually prevent it by using pop filter with a microphone. I don’t have one at the moment and even if I get one, I’m not sure how to use it with the microphone on my headset…
I found out from eHow that you can create one using cloth hanger and pantyhose… Very cool but I never try this myself so I’m not sure how good it is. You can try it though, but be careful when unwinding the hanger as you don’t want to get yourself hurt in the process. Though this homemade pop filter is innovative, it obviously will not replace the professionally made pop filter
In case you’re interested, I’m currently using Logitech Premium Headset to record the audio and I think the quality is acceptable. The audio come out clear but with this kind of setup you won’t get the crisp sound that you normally hear on the radio. It is quite sensitive though. I have to push the microphone a bit high up to prevent it from catching too much of my breath sound. I’m eying myself on the blue yeti microphone but I don’t know where to get it here. I saw some recording microphone on a few websites in Malaysia but it’s more on the high end, which is something that I don’t need that at the moment.
It is interesting to be able to figure it out all that in a very short period of time and I’m hooked. Now I’m looking into a collection of PLR products that I have and want to create an audio and simple video for it. That will definitely enhance its value and will be more valuable when I try to sell it later
